From Father Frank
I just returned from a gathering of priests with the Cardinal to celebrate his 10th anniversary as Archbishop of Chicago. A 45 minute video was shown depicting a variety of priests in their parishes, followed by two talks highlighting the Cardinal’s contributions to the diocese, a liturgy and dinner. There were a good number of priests who attended the gathering ranging from 26 to 90 years old. Needless to say, most are over the age of 60. The event was rather low keyed, much in keeping with the Cardinal’s demeanor. He stated that he prefers to remain in the background, not the center of attention; but lately, he said that he is becoming more comfortable being in the forefront.

The cardinal stated that he wants us to work more diligently on vocations to the priesthood, adult catechesis and evangelization. Let us pray that the Spirit will continue to guide the Cardinal in his ministry as Archbishop of Chicago. I have put together a steering committee to look at how the school building might be used or transformed to meet our needs as a parish. These parishioners will be asking many of you for input in regards to the future use of the building. The largest obstacle to overcome concerns funding: how or where to get the money necessary for this immense undertaking. The empty school building is costing the parish $50,000 per year just for gas; this and the other utility bills are causing a huge financial burden on the parish…one we cannot afford to have. As our deficit increases, we need to confront the reality of our financial situation and perhaps come up with more creative solutions to this problem. Something has to change. Next week is Pentecost Sunday, a celebration of the Church’s beginning. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will fill as we continue to minister to God’s people.

Peace, Fr. Frank
